Security Guard License

In order to obtain a New York State security guard license, you have to meet the following minimum requirements: you must be 18 years and older, be a citizen from New York and pass an FBI back ground check with no serious convictions or felonies.  If you fulfill one of the following requirements for a federal government agency, you are exempt from applying:

  • A security guard subject to registration and training from the federal government.
  • Correction Officer or former correction officer for the State
  • Bridge and Tunnel Officer for the State
  • Court officer or Clerk for the City/State or Federal government
  • A volunteer security guard for the federal government
  • Active police officers. If you are employed by a contractual entity, you do need to complete an employee statement, but do not need to be fingerprinted.
  • Peace officers who are working security as part of their official duties for their primary employer. If you are moonlighting, though, you must register.

Once you have completed the 8 hour Pre-Assignment Training Course, you are must be electronically fingerprinted at a state accredited facility in addition to fill out forms for

During your security registration application process you must submit a L-1 electronic fingerprinting enrollment service issued by NYS as well as complete an 8 hour pre-assignment class approved by one of the NYS schools.

 

Classes that we offer for Security Guards:

8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course (Prior to employment)

This is the required course that must be completed before applying to the NY Department of State for security guard registration card. The course provides the student with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in this course include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct.

Upon finishing the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course,  a passing grade on the examination is required for successful completion of the course.

16 Hour On-the-Job (OTJ) Training Course

The second required course is the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training course which must be completed within 90 days of starting employment. This training program should be relevant to the guard’s duties, requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer. Topics covered in this course include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, ethics and conduct, incident command system, and terrorism. Schools may conduct this training in an approved classroom setting or at an approved work site which is conducive to learning.

Upon finishing the 16 Hour On-the-Job (OTJ) Training Course,  a passing grade on the examination is required for successful completion of the course.

8 Hour Annual In-Service Training Course

This is an 8 hour course that must be completed within 12 calendar months from completion of the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards, and annually thereafter. The course is structured to provide the student with updated and enhanced information on the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct. This course is not required to be onsite and can be completed in a school or approved class room setting.

Upon finishing the 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training Course,  a passing grade on the examination is required for successful completion of the course.
